Tools for Mental Health Awareness Month

Around one in five Americans has a diagnosed mental illness, and plenty more have not been formally diagnosed but continue to silently struggle through life. Though society has made significant strides toward de-stigmatizing mental illness in the past decade, there is still plenty of work to do. It’s also no secret that COVID-19 has deteriorated the nation’s collective mental health in the past year. Heather Bryan Law, P.A. is attuned to the importance of mental health and makes efforts to connect our clients with the right tools.

Therapy Can Be For Everyone

An outdated and downright harmful belief is that only those with severe and debilitating mental illnesses—the “crazy” as they might be derogatorily referred to—need talk therapy. The simple truth is that anyone can benefit from therapy or counseling.

Major life events can trigger mental health episodes. These include:

  • Divorce
  • Disputes over time-sharing or parenting plans
  • Arrests or convictions (of you or family members)
  • Serious physical injuries
  • The death or incapacitation of a loved one

The lack of mental health services is quite prominent inside jails and prisons. At least half of all inmates nationwide deal with mental health issues.

Counseling That Meets You Where You Are

Regardless of your or a loved one’s reason for seeking counseling, traditional access to therapists has been significantly curtailed by COVID-19. In its place, virtual counseling service providers have been experiencing exponential demand during the pandemic. A few popular companies include BetterHelp, Talkspace, Online-Therapy.com, Amwell, MDLive, and Doctor on Demand.

Some of those providers take insurance, and the pricing plans are different for each one. While each one has advantages and disadvantages, they all help you get connected to a licensed mental health professional that you can access virtually and on your schedule. Some offer family counseling that is geared toward families undergoing separation or divorce. Many providers can connect your kids with a therapist if they are having trouble processing your divorce. Again, just about everyone can benefit from counseling during a major life event—even you. These online counseling service providers can make it easy for you to take care of yourself no matter how busy you are.
